Purpose Seekers
What is purpose? Where do you find it? Do we define it within ourselves?
Purpose - “A desired goal; an intention.”
My good friend Webster gives a short and sweet definition in my $.97 “Wal-Mart Special” dictionary. If you ask me, it leaves a little to be desired, but I am not lugging the unabridged version out, so bear with me if you can. I know personally that purpose can also be a feeling, an emotion, or even a sense of self-worth. This brings me to a slightly un-fun realization; purpose has a very silent but deadly archenemy: purposelessness. I suppose purposelessness would be defined, “Lacking a desired goal; without intention.” which is also a feeling, an emotion or a sense of self-worth. However, I’ll come back to that.
Where do we find purpose? In friends, family, careers, acquaintances, causes, money, experiences? These are all very valid places to seek it out. In fact, some of these are so important in living life. As in my case, it’s easy to get stuck in the rut of purpose-seeking. Now don’t get me wrong, I believe we should all be on a quest toward our own destiny and I highly encourage it. But my brothers and sisters, let me show you a better way. The tendency of us as Americans and well, humans, is to go at everything with an “All or nothing!” attitude. It’s hard to admit I know, but you aren’t alone. My point is that we tend to look for our whole purpose of being in any number of outside sources. If our entire sense of self-worth are found in these places, then our entire world hinges on the circumstantial. Or, worse yet, what if our whole purpose and entire sense of self-worth is not found in these things at all, try as we might? This brings me back to my earlier observation about “purposelessness”. When our desired goal is not met and our best intention is not received or accepted we are left with hopelessness, despair and feeling a little less than validated to say the least. When purpose and destiny are defined within ourselves, what we achieve is nothing more than disappointment.
“Purpose” is a divine gift from the Lord Himself, given in entirety, but found in one place and one place only... at the feet of the Giver. Purpose is predestined, preordained and lingers heavily in the presence of God ("Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,” “In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of Him who worketh all things after the counsel of His will:” Eph. 1:3-5,11) Dear one, let me tell you that if you have a pure and determined heart seeking after God, you WILL run right into your perfectly designed plan at the exact moment the Lord has intended. Every day is just one day closer; not to you finding your purpose, but to your purpose leaping out and grabbing on to you with full force along your journey to seeking the face and heart of your Creator.
Prayer for purpose:
Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your good and perfect will that is working in my life. Lord, I ask that You would give me glimpses of my ultimate purpose when I need some encouragement and reveal to me each day that what You have for me at this moment is just as much a part of the plan as what You have in store for me later. Give me a heart of compassion for others, for those that I know well and those that I don’t know at all, and help me to inspire and point them in the right direction toward their destiny as we walk together. And Father, I ask that You would cause a deeper seek to rise up within me, a burning desire to know You more and more. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Ah, brave soul you are. To take such a HUGE topic as "purpose" and expound on it in such a blessed, albeit, limited forum. Would be easier to sculpt Mt. Rushmore with a tea spoon, but for such a brief summary of a grand subject, you did very well. This is one of those I would like to see s t r e t c h e d out more and I think you would do a longer work justice.
