1 Kings 19:11-13
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountain apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
I was thinking about this passage the other day, and I began to look at it in a different way. Could it be that the "gentle whisper" was speaking even during the louder situations (wind, earthquake, fire)? But Elijah could not hear it because he was in the midst of the situation. All the noise and commotion drowned out the voice of God. It wasn't until he separated himself from the situation that he was able to hear the voice of God.
It's hard to hear God, to determine His voice and His will when you have so many other "voices" telling you what you should do. But it is also hard to separate from those voices when, as humans, we desire to win the approval of those around us. What really matters? The approval of men or the applause of God? Easier said than done.
Sometimes, we must simply separate ourselves from these situations so that we can hear the gentle whispers of our Savior as well.
