HE IS NOT HERE
When my wife and I went to Israel last November, the site I wanted to visit the most was the Garden Tomb. The location of the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the focal point of our hope as believers and a place I wanted to see for myself. It wasn't that I doubted it or needed to look in the tomb just to make sure Jesus was not there. The empty tomb is the site where the greatest event in all of history occurred.
As our tour group entered the Garden Tomb area, I was in awe of the beauty of the garden. We moved through the garden area and stopped at various locations for teaching of the Biblical and historical background of the site. As our guide led us to the Garden Tomb, he made the comment: "You are all lining up to see nothing." That's exactly what we did! I could feel the excitement within me as we moved closer to our turn to enter the tomb. Our time finally arrived and we took the step into the tomb. What an awesome experience. All the Easter songs and stories came alive! The tomb was indeed empty!
In this Garden Tomb 2,000 years ago, our Savior ended his brief stay. The stone was rolled away and Jesus Christ walked out in victory over death. Jesus not only came out of the grave but He was seen by hundreds of people who gave testimony to His resurrection. Take a look at the list of witnesses who testify to the resurrection of our Lord:
Mary (John 20:10-18)
Mary and other women (Matthew 28:1-10)
Peter (1 Corinthians 15:5)
Two disciples (Luke 24:13-35)
Ten apostles (Luke 24:36-49; John 20:19-23)
Eleven apostles (John 20:24-31)
Seven apostles (John 21)
All apostles (Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:14-18)
500 brethren (1 Corinthians 15:6)
James (1 Corinthians 15:7)
All apostles (Acts 1:4-8)
Paul (Acts 9:1-9; 1 Corinthians 15:8)
(from The Evidence Bible, p. 1241, Bridge-Logos)
In our busy and distracted lives, we easily forget the impact of Christ's resurrection. As we grow older and our years get shorter on this earth, we all still have that solid hope. Just as our Savior conquered death, He has promised us victory over the grave. God used a rainbow as a promise to Noah that He would never again destroy the earth with a flood. The empty tomb is proof that God will also fulfill the promise of His Son to all that believe.
