Marriage
I remember when I was a little child, I used to play hopscotch on the sidewalk in front of the house.
Back then there was no such thing as 'sidewalk chalk' - we had to go hunting for exactly the right kind of rock - one soft enough to leave a mark when scraped across the concrete.
Once that was found, I'd set about making the boxes in a specific design, and when it was done, the other neighborhood kids would gather round, and we'd proceed to play our game.
Sometimes it was just a test of skill, could we really hop on one foot all that way?
And hit each box without touching a line or putting the other foot down?
When that was mastered, it was time to add on, we'd toss a stone onto the grid, and as we hopped, we'd have to lean down and pick it up on the way by.
I look back now and marvel that this simple game would be played for hours - and along with the hopping, we'd make up stories to go with it, adventures in those boxes on the ground.
The memory reminds me of us, and the love we share each day - and each morning we have a brand new pattern that Jesus has laid out for us to play.
There is such joy in finding how to go down each pattern, picking up bouquets of blessings along the way...and we linger in each little square marked out and think...'how do I love you?
Let me count the ways.' Each little box is like an hour in our day, and this gift of time together we share.... and inside this gift we give each other smaller ones that say just how much we care.
And just when we think we have mastered that pattern, lest the game get a little old, Jesus adds to the pattern, stretching our spirits, letting new vistas in front of us unfold.
Refreshed and renewed we continue our journey, discovering yet again that all things are new and rejoicing in the gift of love that we have, living out our dream come true.
I thank God for the childhood memories, for all the dreams that He has made come true, and most of all I thank my Father above, for the best one of all.... the gift of you.
