Faith

During my college days at a small Christian college in Montgomery, Alabama I went home with a friend. His home was in Fort Madison, Iowa. The neighborhood was decorated with old two story block houses with sidewalks running both sides of the street. It had been the setting for the musical, the "Music Man".

We greeted one of his neighbors on the way into his house. Most of the town was Catholic, while he was a member of a small protestant Christian church. For reasons that are still unclear to me, he and the neighbor began a heated discussion over attending church. Now, religious arguments were always a part of his family's relationship with the community. However, me friend was not talking about faith, but attending church. He was making a case that he was "faithful" because he had attended services since he was a little boy. What apparently passed for faith was showing up for services.

That event has been with me through the years as I've contemplated the meaning of faithful. I'll admit that attending church services is not what I think of when I consider faith. To me, it is not an indicator faith. However, the word is not just a church work. I think it means simply following through with decisions long after the feeling (mood, thought) that gave birth to that decision has passed.
