What if I were in the crowd that day,
What is it that I would see?
How would I feel about what happened,
That day at Calvary?
Shouting “Crucify him! Crucify him!”
What was going through their heads?
Have they no compassion?
Do they just want him dead?
The crowd had Barabas released
But they left Jesus in the guard's hands.
They beat him repeatedly until his flesh,
Didn’t resemble that of a man.
They stripped him of his clothing,
Then put a scarlet robe on him.
Pressed a crown of thorns on his head,
And mocked him over and over again.
“Hail, King of the Jews!” they scoffed
I can still hear them as they cried,
“King of the Jews?” as they spit on him.
Then they took him to be crucified!
My tears fell as they nailed him to the cross.
I thought, “My God, what have they done?”
“Don’t they know who this man is?
“Don’t they know that He’s the one?”
Some shouted “If you’re the Son of God,
“Come on down from there!”
Others screamed “Let God save him now,
He doesn’t have a prayer!”
For several hours there was darkness
As far as we could see.
Then Jesus cried out, “My God,
Why have you forsaken me?”
He gave up his spirit,
Then cried out once more.
We all saw sights that day,
That we had never seen before.
The earth shook, rocks split,
We were all filled with fear.
In the distance I could see his mother,
And Mary Magdalene were there.
His battered body was wrapped in linen,
Placed in a tomb to stay.
They rolled a stone in front of it,
And then on that third day.
An angel appeared and moved the stone,
And told the women, “Don’t be afraid,
“Go tell His disciples He has risen from the dead.”
So they ran without delay.
Jesus had the angel tell them,
To meet him in Galilee.
When they met he told his disciples,
“Yes, it truly is me”.
Make disciples of all nations he coommanded
Saying, “This I ask of you,”
"Baptize them in the name of the Father,
The Son, and Holy Spirit too."
“Teach them as I have taught you,
Teach them to obey,
And surely I will be with you,
Until the end of age”.
Although my heart was broken that day,
Now I know why it had to be done.
How God so loved the world,
That he gave his only son.
It changed the lives of all who believe.
And we may never quite understand.
But I’ll try to live by, and obey His Word,
Because His sacrifice was all part of His Plan.
