Song in the Night
“I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me. When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands and my soul refused to be comforted. I remembered you, O God, and I groaned; I mused, and my spirit grew faint.” Psalm 77:1-3
Do you have those nights? You know the ones I’m talking about when you toss and turn and can’t sleep, you are in pain, but worse than that is the way your mind refuses to be still. You try to pray, groan, think, and the situation worsens. The more you think, the worse you feel.
In Psalm 77, the Psalmist did the same thing and became overwhelmed with the magnitude of what he was facing. He cried, sought, stretched, refused, groaned, mused, and almost fainted. Talk about a bad night!
Verse 10 begins with “Then I thought”. I can see the light bulb coming on over his head. I can see the guy in the V-8 commercial slapping his forehead when he realizes that he could have done something different. “Why didn’t I think of that?”
What amazing idea came to the psalmist? He simply realized that he needed to think about something different- something positive. He would think about “the deeds of the Lord’, His “miracles of old”, he would meditate on “all of God’s works”, and consider all of God’s “Mighty deeds”.
Stop thinking and worrying. Thank God for everything within your sight or reach if it takes all night-you aren’t sleeping anyway. Sing, “These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things” and put your own words in-words that express everything you love, while trying to stay with the tune. (Do not sing out loud if your spouse is asleep beside you).
The Psalmist’s change of thought patterns didn’t take away any of his problems or suddenly make him well, or necessarily make him feel better, but it did encourage him. It did allow him to step aside and let God take over. By the time we get to verse 13, he is thinking about God and not his problems. “What God is so great as our God?”
Heavenly Father, you are great and there is no other with your power. When I am troubled remind me to bring my troubles to the only one who has power to change them and me,
