Born in a Black Home
Born in a black home;
Taught to survive;
Taught the meaning of being black;
Black in a white man's world.
Strife, poverty, and confusion -
Hand me down clothes, beans and rice.
Yes sir, no sir;
Words of a black to authority figures.
Never taught to love;
Always taught about love -
Never saw love in the home;
Don't know how to give love.
Born in a black home -
without love.

This poem is heavy, as is life in poverty. It is not only the black world, but it's everyone's experience that goes on for generation after generation when education is poor. There are all races of children who grow up without experiencing love, or pride, or self-esteem. Your words are not lost on me, a white woman. I am very much interested in seeing poverty and racism conquered. Keep up the good writing.
