Unity in the Community Day
Members of our prayer team have been praying that revival would snatch our community away from evil and turn us back to Jesus Christ. We know that revival must begin in each one of us, individually, before it can spread to the community. We have been praying for that individual revival, for a fire to consume us in God’s Holy Name.
After nearly three years of regular prayer meetings, we recognized that it was time to pray for a collective, citywide revival. It was with eager anticipation that we held our first Unity in the Community Day. The purpose was to gather members of every local church to pray for our community.
As the church initiating Unity Day, we sent out invitations and called local churches. We opened our doors to everyone who wanted to attend. Although many churches were invited, only a few accepted. “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few” (Matthew 9:37).
About 60 people from various churches and denominations around the community joined our church family that cold winter evening. We opened the meeting with the song “Revival” (Copyright © 1998 Daybreak Music Ltd). Following that, we gave a brief explanation of our intents and hopes, then turned to prayer, praise, and worship music. After this, we joined hands in an unbroken circle around the church and prayed specifically for the community’s needs.
We had a time of individual quiet prayer, during which I spoke to God, asking repentance on behalf of those who do not know and do not care. I asked for forgiveness of our sins, mine included. I asked for strength from His Spirit to enable me to boldly and proudly proclaim His name. I know that God heard my words, for I felt the warmth of the Spirit come upon me.
Collectively, we asked for an influx of His Presence to come upon everyone in authority over the city, our school board members, and businesses. We asked that Jesus Christ take back the ownership of the city’s inhabitants, street-by-street, and family-by-family. We asked that God allow us (the church) to stand in the gap and call upon Him to help us build a city of faith and love, founded on the principles of Jesus Christ. We asked that we be allowed to spread the word and participate, as Christians, in parades and other city events.
We proclaimed that the city belongs to Jesus Christ and denounced all evil from its borders. We asked that people turn from their evil ways and embrace the love of Christ. We asked that all churches within the community accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. We asked that His Word become the norm, not the oddity, for this community.
Each one of us could have stayed home, but we chose to attend this event. Although we did not have as many people attend as we had prayed for, we believe that our obedience pleased God, and we believe that He ministered to each person present.
We believe it is our mission, and our privilege, to “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation” (Mark 16:15). We intend to do hold more Unity in the Community Days in an effort to bring more workers into the harvest field. We are confident that “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Phil 1:6).
Our next Unity in the Community Day is being planned for early next year. We ask that God to soften hearts and compel more people to attend.
We will continue our regular Sunday evening revival prayer, adding a prayer that seeds are being planted and watered. We expect changes in our community, based upon our fervent, intercessory prayer to God our Father.
As the song “The Mission” states:
“To love the Lord our God is the heartbeat of our mission
The spring from which our service overflows
Across the street or around the world
The mission's still the same
Proclaim and live the truth in Jesus’ name”
