The Eternal Battle of Fear vs. Trust
by Chaplain Dan Langerock+
Have you ever noticed there are more things in the world that try to make you fear than trust? Everywhere you turn there seems to be bad news: the economy's going down, no raise for Social Security this year, more deaths in Iraq, gas prices going up etc. These make you emotionally off-balance so you keep wondering what is going to happen next.
If you have ever looked at the Bible, you will see that God is trying to get us to trust Him with the future. When the Israelites were coming from Egypt to the Promised Land, God took care of them continuously over 40 years through miraculous means. Yet, when their enemies came after them, they were afraid, failing to remember all the miracles God had done in the past to show how much He loved them.
We have the same problem. We don't have miracles happening in our lives everyday, but we do have some: answers to prayer, blessings, and a host of other examples of God's care for us. Yet, when something ominous happens in the news, we tend to fall apart and forget that God knows what we need.
God wants us to fall in love with Him and delight in Him, then he promises to provide what we need (Matthew 6:25-33) He wants us to make Him our first priority, then the daily needs we have will be supplied because our thoughts are centered in the right place instead of the fear that tries to always grab us. Another example of this, among many, is found in Psalm 37.
When fears try to assail our thinking, it all boils down to a choice: the choice to fear or the choice to trust God and come close to Him so He can help us. He is so much wiser than we are and sees avenues of help for us that escape our vision. He loves it when we come to Him asking in a humble manner, like a child coming to the father and climbing up on his lap, then cuddling close. God loves to cuddle us too when we are having problems.
When things go wrong, where do you turn? Do you come to God with a humble heart and tell Him what is happening or do you try to work things out on your own? Do you have an intimate relationship with God, not just lip service? Is God a vital part of your life or someone who you think about twice a year or less? That closeness is available and the gift of it is free. Will you open this gift from God this year and be close to the One who loves you so much? He is waiting for you and only a thought or prayer away.

Your site is going to minister to me greatly. When I get caught up in fear, and it is from fear for my son who is in a mental health facility, I need to relax and trust God completely, and not mull over my fears.
It's nice you have a contact address for help. Bless you!
