Loves Me, Loves Me Not!
By Missey Butler
If you happen to be of the female persuasion and have ever found yourself in a large field of daisies, you more than likely have performed the rite of passage by picking one of the flowers, plucking the petals one by one, and reciting “He loves me, He loves me not!”
Every young girl dreams about the arrival of her very own Prince Charming. She is ransomed by her grand imaginations of a dashing, young suitor mounted upon his faithful white charger galloping into her life and whisking her off to a far away castle atop the highest mountain. (We can’t help ourselves -- we chicks just seem to have this fantasy coded deep within our DNA).
Not to worry, though. As fate would have it, we do eventually mature into womanhood and recognize that life doesn’t always turn out the way we imagine. The Bible even speaks about the importance of putting away childish things (1 Corinthians 13:11). But one of the neat things I’ve discovered about God is that whenever He has to take something away, He always makes a point of putting back something a whole lot better.
Yes, I had to give up my dreamy idea about the “Prince thing,” but what I discovered was that another hero was anxiously waiting in the wings for me. And He wasn’t just your run-of-the-mill, lower level royalty; rather, the very King of Kings Himself desired to escort me into His beautiful Kingdom to rule and reign alongside of Him.
My day of coronation arrived, and as I stood before Him, He took my hand and gently unfolded my fingers. He smiled at me as he dropped some daisy petals within my palm. I looked down and began to cry as I noticed that He had given me only the petals that had said “He loves me.”
I vowed then to take Him at His Word when He said, “I have loved thee with an everlasting love.”
—Jeremiah 31:3
And, as you may well have already guessed, we went on to live… happily ever after!
