Opak was convinced by his parents to divorce his wife, Lydine. The reason? Not any disagreement and not something you may easily guess (The names have been changed to protect identity).
It was two years since they got married yet they hadn’t got a child. Opak’s parents couldn’t wait to see a grandchild. When they waited that long and nothing happened, they concluded that there must have been something wrong with Lydine.
Opak agreed with his parents to divorce the wife so as to marry another woman who would give them a child.
In some communities in Africa, the family matters are not so nucleic. Though the parents had colluded with their son to send away his wife, it could not happen without the extended family convening a “court” to hear the case.
Opak and his parents attempted to concoct accusations against Lydine but they were late. Word had gone round that the reason they wanted to get rid of her was because she was childless. Since the traditional marriages were not registered, divorce was simply asking your wife to leave. If it is the woman who no longer wanted to stay in the marriage, she would just leave the man. Though the extended family could stop some unnecessary divorces, it was not easy living with someone who was no longer interested in keeping the marriage.
The extended family gathered around to discuss the matter. They never approved that Opak should divorce Lydine. They tried persuading him and his parents but it never worked. Lydine had to go.
The young lady packed her luggage and was on her way. She didn’t go far. Opak's cousin had known why Lydine was being divorced. He had himself tried in vain to persuade Opak not to divorce her.
It happened that Opak’s cousin was at the bus-stop where Lydine had gone to pick the bus. He was planning to marry but hadn’t identified the ‘right’ person. In an interesting turn of events, Opak’s cousin asked the lady there and then to marry him.
Emotional with the pains of rejection, the lady reluctantly accepted.
This young man had just taken a reject. Was he going to regret?
Nine months later and the lady had given birth to an exuberant boy. Opak was not amused but the lesson was learnt.
The above is a true story. This story reminds me of our relationship with Christ. Isn’t it bewildering that mankind are quick to reject Christ when it was Christ who was supposed to reject us. We are the ones who have problems. We are the ones who need help yet we don’t even know it. We reject the One who doesn’t have problem.
The Bible tells us that God loved and gave His Son to save us when we were still His enemies (Romans 5:6-8). We never deserved to have Him in a relationship, yet we think that by accepting Him, we are doing Him a favour. We are like Opak who rejected Lydine when it was supposed to be the other way round.
Though the popular culture has rejected Christ, don’t let this stop you from accepting Him. Behave like Opak’s cousin who boldly took the reject. You will never regret for taking a ‘a reject’.
