“Don`t Give Up The Ghost”
By
Calvin J. Moss
St. John 19:28-31 says after this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished that the scripture might be fulfilled saith I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar and put it upon hyssop and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said it is finished: and he bowed his head and gave up the Ghost. The Holy Ghost is the third Godhead of the Trinity. He is the Spirit of God through which men receive power. He is referred to as the comforter. The Holy Ghost is our guider, keeper, convictor and the revealer of the mysteries of God. He instructs and leads us into all truth. It is the same Holy Ghost who drew you to Christ. Obviously, Jesus is the Holy Ghost according to 1 John 5:7.
The Bible says those who are led by the Spirit are the Sons of God. It was necessary for Jesus to give up the Ghost because if he did not, we would have Salvation for Salvation would not have been completed. As long as Jesus was on earth, there was no need for the Holy Ghost to be there because when ever a problem occurred Jesus was always there. But, when Jesus ascended up into glory, it was necessary for the Holy Ghost to come in order to draw men to Christ and empower them with power since the number of believers increased and the earth`s population increased.
The point that I want to leave you with is don`t give up the Ghost. Many people are giving up the Ghost. Why are they giving up the Ghost? One reason is because they don`t understand that being a christian, is a fight to the finish. The devil is not just going to lie down and let them maintain the salvation without some trouble. The moment we accepted Christ into our hearts we engaged in spiritual warfare. The enemy is sifting and sorting for Christians whose houses are built on sand. If we are going to be useful to God our houses must be built on a rock: the revelation that Jesus is the Christ the son of the living God. Those who have their houses built on sand are usually the ones who give up the Ghost. They are the ones who do not realize the power of Christ.
Many Christians turn away from God because they did not get their mansion, car etc. I believe that God is interested in our Spiritual maturity more than our financial growth. I am not saying that God does not want us to have anything. What I am saying is that when the wind blows don`t give up the Ghost. For some, the enticement of the world is too much to overcome, but this world and the lust of it will surely pass away. We must stop treating God like he is our personal genie. There is nothing wrong with asking, he will not resent your asking but we should also seek God because of who he is not because of what he can give us. The gift of Salvation is the best gift we could ever receive anyway. So who do we think we are by giving up the Ghost? Know not that when ye give up the Ghost, you automatically choose the devil? Many people do not realize that. Some of them think they are getting back at God.
Backsliders think of how they fasted and prayed and did not get exactly what they wanted but I believe that we should continue to fast and pray with the right heart and attitude then our answers will come. Moreover, some are walking in the flesh; which gives the devil firepower against them making it easier for them to backslide. I also believe that it hurts God`s heart when his children go back to the world after all he has done for them. yet, he never leaves or forsakes us.
Beloved, remain faithful to God because salvation is not based on possessions. Salvation is based on Jesus Christ dying for our sins so we who believe would not perish but receive everlasting life. Don`t give up the Ghost. Amen.
