Got Oil?
In Biblical times oil was an important commodity. Oil was necessary for everyday living. Olive oil was used in food, for health and beauty care, olive oil was tithed and used in lamps. To run out of oil was akin to abject poverty.
Oil is still important in our day and anointing oil (symbolic of the Holy Spirit) is still used today. We are to be filled with God's holy Spirit and with the oil of gladness.
Jesus spoke about being prepared for His return through parables on oil. The ten virgins awaiting the Bridegroom had oil lamps they kept burning. Five of those virgins were wise and had a store of oil, the other five virgins were foolish and were not prepared for the Bridegroom's return. (Matt 25 ) Jesus also told us to "be dressed, ready for service and keep your lamps burnings. Like men waiting for their Master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when He comes and knocks at the door they can immediately open the door for Him" (Luke 12:35,36)
Are we prepared for His arrival? Are our lamps full and are we dressed for service? How can we be ready for Jesus return? If you could know the hour of His coming or your going what would you be doing? We need to prioritize and do those things, speak those words and learn that which would be pleasing to our Master, so that when we meet Him face to face we will be found to be acceptable servants. We need to nurture the things that help, uplift, edify and feed our spirits and others. Fill your lamp.
Are there things in our lives that we would NOT want to be caught doing should Jesus come quickly? If there are things we think, speak or do that we would not want our Lord to find us at, then those things need to be cast out from our midst. We have been warned and encouraged to be always watchful. Let's do a personal inventory and get rid of that which has no place in a godly person's life. Trim your wick.
“But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.” (Matthew 15:4)
