Thousands of years ago, a man sat in the darkness alone. The night sky glistened with silvery stars as the glow of the moon fell softly on the trees around him. They were his only companions. He looked down into the fire that burned quietly at his feet. Golden hues of red, and orange – vibrant with life and energy danced before him. A cold feeble hand reached out to the light; and warmed itself. He sighed heavily as he threw another piece of wood into the fire. With eyes tightly closed, and his soul in anguish, he prayed once again. This time he could not control his tears; they flowed freely and heavily down cheeks that burned sharply as the salt from them rolled down his skin. Lord, he thought inwardly – What have I done? What did I do? His body ached, his heart ached, and his mind ached – How many more days of this can I stand? He groaned within himself. He shifted his weight to bear the excruciating pain of his affliction. How much longer Lord? How long Lord? When will this end?

No sooner, after his thoughts, a warm breeze swept over the man and his campfire. Gently flickering and swaying under its caress, He closed his eyes tighter to take in its embrace- soothing to the body, and mind. The breeze cooled his aching body, and briefly, he forgot where he was and remembered times of long ago – happy times, times of prosperity and health, times of blessings beyond his wildest imagination. Suddenly the breeze stopped and the campfire resumed its jittery dance. Once again, all was as it had always been. However, looking around, he sensed things were not the same. The air seemed different; lighter; change was in the air. He was not alone. The stars seemed to shine more then before, as if sending a secret message from the heavens. He sat still for some time after that, using those precious moments to gather his thoughts, to reflect on his past, and to hope for his future. Another stick was thrown into the fire, but this time instead of the usual sigh his voiced was full of promise “The Lord gives, the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord!” Change is in the air.

Whatever you may be going through during your season of winter, remember that just as God was with Job, He is also with you. Ask God for patience in the midst of your trials as you let this experience draw you nearer to Him. Even in the midst of a seemingly bitter cold winter, the Holy Spirit is able to keep you, and warm your spirit with the fire that He alone brings. The comforter will comfort you until your change comes.
