Knowing
I like playing piano. I started taking piano lessons on April 2004. When I started with my first lesson, I thought it would be easy because I already knew how to read notes and play the guitar. But I discovered that piano is an entirely new instrument which my fingers have to be familiar with. My fingers have to perform some exercises like scales, triads, broken chords, and solid chords; otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to play hard musical pieces.
I also learned that if I am ambitious to master hard pieces like Fur Elise, which I think is meant for grade seven students, I have to spend valuable time studying the pieces in sections. How do you eat a whole elephant? One bite at a time. After several weeks of finger twisting and night practices, I’m quite confident of how I play Fur Elise. It’s not yet perfect. There are some ‘signs’ in the music sheet that I thought were ‘dirt’ but in fact were musical symbols. But I’m going there. I have to take the time.
Similarly, I like investment management. Back in my post graduate blues, I’m always amazed at how my professors discuss the concepts of investment, particularly in the US. During those days, the terminologies were all ‘Greek’ but as we invested virtual monies in a mock stock market, I was able to relate the concepts to the actual practice. The stock market pumped my adrenaline and I spent countless hours studying the reasons stock goes up and down. I was amazed at how stock prices relate to the fundamentals of the company. I was equally amazed at how technical analysts relate the values of stocks overtime. I must admit that I haven’t mastered the subject. But just the thought of knowing the answers to my questions inspires me to study more. I’m going there. I have to take the time.
This led me to my conclusion of my relationship with God. I only came to know God personally when I was, I think, 18. Someone encouraged me to read His words. Someone said, “Knowing Him because someone said so and knowing Him because you personally experienced Him is entirely different. You have to take the time and read His book to know Him more.” From the Holy book, I learned about God’s faithfulness in Psalms, God’s wisdom in Proverbs, God’s unconditional love to his children like Job, Joseph, Joshua, David, Abraham and Sarah, Jacob and Esau, Paul, etc. and God’s amazing grace through Jesus Christ, my Lord and Saviour. I learned to appreciate the books in the Bible. Those are His words being spoken to me as I daily commune to Him. As I read stories in the old testament and relate it to my daily challenges, I can’t help but stand in awe of God: He who was able to part the waters so the Israelites can pass through dry lands; He who was able to rescue Elisha from the multitude of armies; He who was able to protect Joseph as a slave while in Egypt and eventually made him second in command to Pharaoh; He who was able to include Rahab, a prostitute, in the lineage of Jesus Christ; He who protected David and helped him win over Goliath; He who has proven in His words that people who trusted Him never lack any good thing; How can I not trust Him when he has proven gazillion times that He can be trusted and He is always faithful? God was with me when he carried me through dark moments, in pains, in depressions, in problems, in challenges, in joys and in happiness. He was also there in my many moments of sins. Oh, He is so patient with me, calling me to ‘come home’ and heed His call.
Proverbs 9:9-10 (NLT) states: Teach the wise, and they will be wiser. Teach the righteous and they will learn more. Fear the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Knowing the Holy One results in understanding.
I admit that I’m not perfect. As long as I am in the flesh, it will war against the Spirit. I have to hang in there and learn daily from Him. I have to take the time. When you spend time ‘talking’ to the Holy One, you will understand why certain things happen in your life. You will learn of His attributes and appreciate His will in your life.
