Tater falls in love
I began to notice a difference in Taters dress and manner when we were in the 8th grade at Caesar Grammar School. Tater began to comb his hair and even brush his teeth on occasion. One day he came in with aftershave lotion on and the fuzz on his face wasn't even long enough to shave. I doubted his dad knew that Tater was using his shaving equipment, although a person would have to have a serious sinus infection not to be overwhelmed with the over powering aroma from the shaving lotion.
Why the sudden change in my ole hunting and fishing pal? Just out of curiosity I began to investigate. It became apparent to me that Tater had fallen in love!!
The object of Taters affection was a new girl by the name of Opal Winkler who had moved into the Caesar community just before school started in 1950. The Winkler name stood out in the community because about 99.9 percent of the folks living in the community at that time were named Lee, Pierson, Jones, with an occasional Varnado thrown in for good measure. The folks in the community were a little suspicious of the Winkler family, the Second World War having just ended a few years earlier with Germany.
The Winklers had bought a small farm north of Caesar and were intending to raise watermelons for the Farmers Market at Bay St. Louis. Olga Winkler, the mother, was a robust woman, quiet in her own way except when it came to giving orders to Opals two brothers. The two brothers, Hans and Seigfred, were the largest of the clan. The farmers in the community said that apparently they were descendants of Goliath of Bible times. On the other hand, Mr. Winkler was short, skinny, and wore bib overalls, had a handlebar mustache and a goatee. He also was never seen in public without wearing a button-down hat such as the ones seen on men driving roadsters in the old black and white gangster movies.
Opal apparently gained Taters affection with her powers as an athlete. She could out arm wrestle, out Indian Wrestle, out jump, and out run any of the other pupils in the 8th grade. Besides that, she could play the National Anthem with her hand under her armpit. Tater said she was quite a gal.
During the summer break between the 8th grade at Caesar Grammar School and the 9th grade at Carriere High School a wonderful change took place in Opal. Metamorphosis set in. Similar to what happens when an old ugly caterpillar turns into a beautiful butterfly. Opal changed. Some of the boys said she blossomed.
It was about this time that Tater lost interest in Opal. He said she had gotten "too citified" for his taste. Opal was elected homecoming Queen her senior year and excelled in mathematics and physics. She went on to Mississippi State University where she got her Masters Degree in Advanced Mathematics. She later went to MIT where she got her Doctorate in Physics. We later learned that she had gotten a Federal Grant to study something called "cold fusion". We folks at Caesar had never heard of something called "cold fusion" but we were proud of Opal anyway.
As far as I know Tater never married. He said that if he could ever find another woman that could play the National Anthem with her hand under her armpit he would marry her in a minute.
