Hopefully Devoted
A super-schmaltzy song from the '70's had the singer claiming she was "hopelessly devoted" to a boy she had met briefly, and my, oh my, how we girls loved that song!
It seemed wonderfully romantic, and the idea of remaining hopelessly devoted to a love, found and then lost, was just dreamy!
Of course, we knew the final results: her devotion didn't turn out to be hopeless-she got the guy, everybody declared they'd be friends forever, and the happy couple drove off into the sky at the end of the movie. I guess that would be a modern version of "riding off into the sunset" at the end of an old Western.
Have you devoted yourself to something or someone, but that devotion didn't lead to a "happily ever after" kind of ending? Somehow, somewhere, the principal characters in your real life diverted from the script...
...and you found yourself without your mate.
Or maybe one day you left a building, a box in your hands, freshly out of a job in the company where you poured out your heart and soul.
Perhaps your hammer-blow setback occurred in the financial area, or health-wise, or through losing everything to a natural disaster or fire, or via shattered dreams...
And there you were, hopeless, after all you gave, and all you found, then lost. Definitely non-dreamy, agreed?
Your thoughts might have led you to questions like these: "Well, if people hurt me, and things happen (or don't happen), no matter what I do, why should I hope anymore? Is there anything or anyone I can devote myself to who won't let me down?"
Yep. You can be confident about devoting yourself to God, because He won't fail.
The writer of Hebrews mentions that God keeps ALL of His promises, and encourages his readers with these words: "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure." (Hebrews 6:19, NIV)
Let me echo that thought by suggesting that you make yourself "hopefully devoted" to Him-you won't be disappointed!
