So often, we sit on our testimonies because we are afraid of what people will think or say about us; or, we don’t want to remember because it brings back so much pain and disgust. There are things in life that we need to remember; we need to remember, more than anything, that before God touched our hearts, we were sinners too, and we did things that were not right.
If we can remember that we used to be liars, addicts (drug, alcohol, sex, confusion, backstabbing), whoremongers, adulterers, jealous, hateful, inconsiderate, we will be cautious about pointing at others and looking down on others. Before you criticize someone for being a sinner, think back on what it took for God to get your attention. You need to have enough compassion to say, “I know what you’re going through because I’ve been there, but I don’t want you to have to suffer what I had to suffer.” Maybe your words of testimony can encourage someone to turn away from the way that he is going.
No one needs criticism when he is already down in the dirt, waddling; a person needs someone to have enough compassion to tell him that he doesn’t have to stay in the dirt, a person needs to know that someone else has been where he is, and was able to be saved and delivered.
It’s time that we stop putting our past so far back in our memory bank until we can’t withdraw on it. We act like it never happened, but we need to bring it to the forefront so that it can be used as an instrument to save someone else or to help someone else go through.
Going down memory lane will help you realize that you are saved by grace, and forces to think about where you could’ve been, should’ve been, and would’ve been, had God not saved you. We are far from perfect, but there are some folk out there trying to get where we are, yet are having such a difficult time because we are pretending that we have always had it together. They cannot believe that they can be saved because we act like we have always been saved.
We have been messed up, tore up, ripped up, and beat up with, by and through sin, but on God’s grace brought us through. Somebody somewhere needs to know that you had some problems, and that you went through some things to realize, understand and accept that there is salvation for him regardless of what kind of mess he is in. We know the messy lives that we’ve lived, but look where God has brought us. Stop suppressing your memory because you’re suppressing your witness and your praise.
I know many of us, if we took the time to look back,
We could mentally visualize many of Satan’s mighty attacks
That brought us to great despair and grief;
But, we can also remember how God’s promises provided relief
From the emotional pain that brought us to tears,
And how those attacks made us stronger and wiser down through the years.
Every now and again, we will take a walk down memory lane
To review our past joys and evaluate past pain
To remind us of how good and mighty God truly is in our lives,
And those memories give us a stronger will and desire to continue to abide
In His will and in His way
So that we may experience eternal joy some sweet day.
You are encouraged to remember the burdens that you’ve had to bear
To remind you that God has always been and always will be there.
You are encouraged to revisit the pain that bought you to uncontrollable tears
To remind you that it was God that wiped then away and helped you overcome your fears.
You are encouraged to think about where you could have been
Had not God chosen to deliver you from your pit of sin.
You are encouraged to use your valley experience
To let Satan know that you won’t allow his interference;
For, you refuse to turn back to from whence you came
Because God’s strength and power has made a great change
That makes you want to continue down the righteous pathway
Moving forward until you are fortunate enough to see eternity some day.
You are encouraged to have mercy upon those that have done you wrong
And to pray for those who walked away, leaving you to stand alone;
For, it’s not that you were so good that you were saved,
But, God’s chastisement rod persuaded you not to misbehave.
Your salvation and deliverance weren’t done just for yourself,
But, God saved you so that you may be an instrument to save someone else.
So, it is imperative that you remember who you used to be and what you used to do
So that you can help some other lost soul to find his way through.
Therefore, I encourage you, each day to take a moment to walk down memory lane
So that those memories can arouse a desire in you to save someone else from that pain.
