“Will the Lord cast off forever? And will He be favourable no more? Has His mercy ceased forever? Has His promise failed forevermore? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has He in anger shut up His tender mercies? Selah.

And I said, ‘This is my anguish; but I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High. I will remember the works of the LORD; surely I will remember Your wonders of old. I will meditate on all Your deeds.

Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary; who is so great a God as our God? You are the God who does wonders; You have declared Your strength among the peoples. You have with Your arm redeemed Your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

Psalm 77: 7-15

Upon the recollections that follow these six inquires, the psalmist (Asaph) could answer his own questions with an emphatic no, no, no, no, no, no. He needed to bring to his mind the faithfulness of the Most High to drive these doubting questions from his mind. It was anguish to him to be so captured by these doubts. The times his spirit was overwhelmed (vs.3) was fresh in his mind.

So, his choice was to remember God’s right hand of guidance, His marvellous works, His wonders of the past, and he would allow his mind to be bathed in these truths. This conclusion is summed up in a question that is its own answer, “Who is so great a God as our God?” and the added declaration, “You are the God who does wonders.”

Because I should recollect God’s goodnesses before I ask where they are and question Him as to their absence, may I pause to do so, by His grace and for His glory.
