Wait 'til you hear what caused me to write about this subject... 

It was a conversation that I had with a Lyft driver about people being very needy, but being too discouraged to ask for or receive help. 

If the subject is discouragement, I have been there and back again, more than a few times. 

I am talking about being so profoundly weary that there were times when I could not even pray anymore. I have also been through times where I flat-out refused to pray.

The Bible says that there is... no temptation that has overtaken you except what is common to man.

1 Corinthians 10:13.

What I would like to share is what I learned about walking through discouragement in a biblical way.

The first thing to know is that you are never alone.  Some of the greatest persons in the Bible had similar experiences.

Like David, for example.

In Psalm 23, he talks about "walking through" the valley of the shadow...

When I read that verse, I try to remind myself that it doesn't say to stand still and complain. That is always the temptation that I face when I feel discouraged.

It says: "though I walk through..."

So, the first reminder is to: "walk through..."

Don't pitch a tent and camp out.

If you do, you may spend 40 years wandering in the desert, for what should have been an 11-day trip.

And, don't stop to make a golden calf because you think that God is not hearing or answering you.

The second reminder is to “encourage yourself in the Lord”, as David did. 1 Samuel 30:6 (KJV)

The third reminder is: “to remember” all the things that God has done for you. Psalm 77:11-12 (KJV)

And while you are remembering:

Remember also, that God is the "God of the Valleys" that you are in:

"Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys; therefore, will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD." 1 Kings 20:28

God understands your struggle more than Paul did when he wrote...

"For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified." 1 Corinthians 2:2.

And God is more determined than Paul could have ever been to see Christ in you, even during times when you are faltering.

When I couldn't pray it helped me to remember these verses:

Daniel 9:20-23

While Daniel was still speaking and praying, God sent Gabriel with the answer.

Daniel 10:12

(This passage says that Daniel's answer was delayed by 21 days), but lets him know...

"From the very first day... thy words were heard."

Psalm 91:15 KJV

"He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him."

Isaiah 58:9

"Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am..."

Then I told the Lyft driver as he was about to drop me off:

"It's okay if you are going through a time when you feel like you can't pray.

There are some people who get angry and almost stop believing altogether when things get difficult." 

When I see that happening to me, I just ask myself One Question:

"Who... is serving ...Who?"

Just know that when you can't pray... or won't because you are too angry - that your heart is still crying out, for you.

And God can hear it.

Because He says:

In Isaiah 65:24

“And it shall come to pass, that before they call..., I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear."

So, even when you just can't pray another prayer:

The God of the Valleys is still hearing…
