‘Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the son of the living God.”’                  Matthew 18:16 (NIV)

This response to the question of Jesus’ identity is a strong testimonial to Peter’s faithfulness.  Yet the first great leader of the church at Jerusalem often showed unpredictable and unreliable tendencies.  Peter was impetuous: he dared to rebuke Jesus as He unfolded plans for His days on earth (Matthew 16:22), and then fearlessly sliced off a soldier’s ear in Gethsemane Garden in order to defend his master (John 18:10).  Peter was devoted: he announced that he would lay down his life for Christ (John 13:48) but then thrice before the rooster crowed on that fateful day in Caiaphas’ courtyard, fearfully denied knowing Christ (John 18:25-27).  Later the same Peter, by the Sea of Tiberius, renounces his shameful confession and adamantly declares his devotion for Christ three times over (John 21:15-17).

Defend and deny.  Fearless and afraid.  Devoted yet wavering in commitment.  Peter, the changeable disciple, was a testimony that God chooses the weak and foolish to shame the wise and strong, ‘so that none may boast before Him’ 1 Cor. 1:29 (NIV).  Let us be encouraged in our humanness.  God takes us as we are: sinful, broken and weak, transforming us into vessels of worth, useful for His purposes.  Like Peter we too are changeable, yet chosen people, called to faithfully profess that Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God.

‘Father thank you that you love us even in our weakness and vulnerability.  Give us strength and opportunity to speak of you and serve in your name today.  Amen’
