The lyrics of a popular Christmas song portray Santa Claus as having an all-seeing eye. He knows if “you’ve been bad or good” so be good or else! Many children make a list of toys they want from Santa hoping he will judge them “nice” enough to get everything on their list rather than “naughty” and deserving of a bag of lumpy coal instead.
Too many adults take a similar view of God. He is watching us and keeping a list of our deeds. He’ll punish us if we are bad or, if we are good enough, reward us with the things we want. Including heaven.
God indeed, “[watches] everyone closely, examining every person (Psalms 11:4). But his gifts and his “reward system,” go far beyond shallow materialism and applause for good behavior. God sent Jesus to bear God’s wrath for our sins while we were his enemies (Romans 5:8-10). His grace, love, and eternal life are all free gifts through faith and not by good works (Ephesians 2:8-9, Psalms 84:11, John 3:16, 1 Peter 2:10). We are counted blameless because of Christ’s sacrifice alone (Jude 1:24).
After we repent and yield our lives to Christ, he keeps no list of wrongs (Hebrews 8:10-12). He gives us peace the world cannot give (John 14:27), fills us with his power through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8), and issues gifts of service for the blessing of others and for his glory. (1 Peter 4:10-11). And those who remain obedient and faithful will receive glory and a great reward in heaven (2 Timothy 2:12, Matthew 5:10-12).
This Christmas, let’s leave behind the rush and stress and turn instead to the baby in the manger who grew up to bring us the free gift of peace, freedom from sin, and eternal life.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank you that unlike Santa, you offer us the free gift of salvation that makes us righteous in your sight and give us eternal life. AMEN
