Still Waters

“He leads me beside still waters.” Psalm 23:2b

Oh, to be led beside still waters. It has been said that fast moving, turbulent streams are disastrous to sheep. They cannot negotiate them and the effect of the waters upon their fleece-bound bodies drags them down and submerges them beneath the flood. They need a shepherd who is, first of all, knowledgeable of this and also one that cares enough to lead them beside still waters even though raging waters may be all around them.

The turbulent waters do exist but in the presence of the shepherd the sheep can be assured of a resting place that not only provides repose but an opportunity, a safe opportunity, to drink of those still waters until their thirst is quenched.

The psalmist, David, had experienced his Shepherd doing this for him and could say with certainty, “He leads me beside still waters.” How thankful he must have been for this place of peace that his Shepherd made available to him and lovingly guided him there.

Because the Lord is my Shepherd also, I can follow His lead which draws me beside the still waters of His peace, by His grace and for His glory.
