God's But God Or Our But God?

“But God” are two very important words. There is our“But God” or God’s “But God.” Which will we choose?  When God called Gideon to deliver Israel from their enemies, he responded with, “But God . . .;” he and his family were too weak and insignificant. (Judges 6:11-16) Moses replied, “But God  . . .” when called to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt; he couldn’t speak well. (Exodus 4:10)When God promised Abraham a son, Abraham replied, “How could I become a father at the age of 100?” (Genesis 17:17) 

In each of these stories, God intervened with his own, “But God.”  He defeated Israel’s enemies with only a small army led by Gideon.(Judges 7) Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt after God sent a series of plagues against the Egyptians. God gave Abraham and Sarah the promised son in their old age with another promise that through that son, Isaac, all the nations of the world would be blessed. (Genesis 22:18)  

We all can offer our excuses:

“But God, I don’t have what it takes.”

“But God, I’m too scared.”

“But God, they made me angry.”

“But God, my sin is too great.”

God’s “But God” always trumps ours. His greatest “but God” was Jesus.

On Pentecost, Peter preached that wicked people nailed Jesus to the cross, “But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out” and  “But God . . . raised (Jesus) back to life.” Acts 2:22-24 NLT Ephesians 2:1-5 tells us that, “we were subject to God’s anger . . . But God . . . loved us so much,that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead.” NLT 

Let’s lay aside our “But God . . .”  and trust God’s “But God” instead.  He can intervene in seemingly impossible situations. He keeps his promises. He will bring good from every situation, heal us, provide for us, transform us, deliver us, and enable us to do what he has called us to do. 

PRAYER: Almighty God, I choose to believe in your “But God” and your power over every situation in my life. AMEN.
