Come unto Me

As a very young teenager over 70 years ago my parents got me confirmed in the Church of England.
Being somewhat religious by upbringing, I began going to Holy Communion at 8.00 on a Sunday morning in the little Dorset village church in the south of England.
One advantage of that was that it eased my conscience about going fishing the rest of the day!
Every Sunday, Miss Winnie Aish would play the organ, and Reverend William Uphill would conduct the Communion service.
One element in every service that God seemed to fix in my mind was his Bible reading of the end of Matthew chapter 11, verses 28-30.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Such a precious acknowledgement of our frail human nature and the beautiful invitation of Jesus to take all our struggles and needs to him.
And every one of us is just as easily ‘weak and heavy laden’ as Jesus’ hearers were back then.
And he is just as able to bring us into his rest today in 2025.
