Local Church Membership, God's Blueprint for Believers Spiritual Growth

Local Church Membership: God’s Blueprint for Believers’ Spiritual Growth and Sustenance

A worrisome trend has emerged in modern Christianity - many believers are replacing active local church membership with online followership of popular Pastors and Preachers. Today, many believers have become deeply connected to online Preachers and virtual church services. It is unarguable that technology has made it easier to access sermons and teachings from anointed ministers across the world, and that online platforms equally offer inspiration and biblical teachings, however, these were never meant to substitute believers’ active participation in a local church or replace the God-ordained system for the growth and sustenance of believers—the local church.

There are two cardinal scriptures I’d like to make reference to:

Hebrews 10:25 says, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching”

James 5:14 says, “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.”

These scriptures highlight undeniable truths: firstly, God designed the local church as the primary place for spiritual growth, fellowship, and accountability. The Bible commands believers not to forsake gathering together, yet many now prefer virtual sermons over in-person worship and pastoral care. This shift is dangerous because no matter how impactful an online preacher may be, they cannot provide the personal presence needed in moments of sickness, grief, or critical life decisions. Your “online Pastor” does not know your struggles intimately, and in your day of trouble, you cannot expect that Pastor you follow online, who only sees you as part of a virtual audience (statistics), to show up at your hospital bed, counsel you in times of distress, or conduct your wedding or funeral. 

God designed the local church family as a system to provide believers with the needed genuine fellowship, accountability, and pastoral care. The local church is where we serve, grow, and receive hands-on discipleship. It is where we find a spiritual covering and a community that knows us beyond a profile picture or a comment on a livestream. 

While online ministries can supplement spiritual growth, they should never replace local church membership. Every believer needs a home church, a pastor who knows them by name, and a spiritual family to walk with them in both the good times and the bad. God’s plan has always been for His people to be planted in a local church—because true spiritual sustenance comes from real, personal relationships, not just distant online connections.

I feel that every Preacher and Pastor who attracts massive online audiences owe their “online followers” a strict duty. That duty is to plainly and constantly put out a caveat, that, while their programs, events, and services provide spiritual nourishment, they should never be taken as a substitute for local church membership.  Yes, it is imperative that popular online Preachers remind their followers that true Christian fellowship requires personal connection, accountability, and service within a local body of believers. They should use their platforms to encourage church attendance, support for local Pastors, and active participation in community-based ministry. 

In addition, many believers today have stopped attending a local church due to hurts, disappointments, or disagreements. However, we must remember that even Jesus, during His earthly ministry, never stopped worshipping in the same temple as the Pharisees, High Priests, and Scribes - many of whom opposed and attacked Him (Luke 4:16, John 18:20). If Jesus, who was perfect, still honored the gathering of God’s people despite the flaws of its leaders, how much more should we? No church is perfect because it is made up of imperfect people. Yet, God designed the local church as the place for our spiritual growth, fellowship, and accountability. Abandoning it because of human shortcomings only isolates us from the very system God put in place for our sustenance. 

As I conclude, it is also important to state that those of you out there, who have stopped attending a local church on the supposition that you can thrive on the teachings and preaching of your “online Pastors”, please you need to realize that you are completely out of alignment with God’s ordained system and order. It is not in doubt that online ministries can complement faith and bless believers, however, they should never replace local church membership. Every believer needs a home church family, a Pastor who knows them personally, and a community of faith that provides strength, encouragement, and accountability. Online ministry is a powerful tool, but it should always lead people toward, not away from, their local church. Faith flourishes best in real, tangible relationships—something no digital experience can fully replace.
