Why People Are Drifting Apart In the Last Days

The world has changed dramatically in the past several decades. Many people are noticing a growing sense of isolation and distance, even among family and friends. People are no longer calling or visiting like they used to. Instead, communication has become shallow—limited to text messages, emails, or quick social media interactions.

This isn’t just a coincidence. The Bible warns us that in the last days, the love of many will grow cold.

“And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” (Matthew 24:12)

There are several reasons why this is happening.

  Global hardships and uncertainty
  Economic struggles, job losses, and natural disasters have left people overwhelmed. Many are barely managing their own problems and no longer have the energy to maintain relationships.

  Technology has replaced real connection
  People are more connected than ever digitally, yet more disconnected emotionally. Social media gives the illusion of community, but in reality, it creates superficial relationships.

  Increased division in society
  Political, social, and even spiritual differences are driving wedges between families and friends. People avoid deep conversations, fearing conflict, and as a result, relationships weaken.

  Rising anxiety and depression
  More people are battling loneliness, stress, and mental health struggles. Some withdraw because they don’t know how to express their emotions, while others have become numb to relationships altogether.

  The shift away from biblical values
  Churches that once emphasized true fellowship and community have turned into entertainment hubs. Instead of deep, meaningful gatherings centered on God’s Word, many churches focus on seeker-friendly messages that prioritize popularity over truth.

All of this aligns with 2 Timothy 3:1-4, which describes the last days as a time when people will be lovers of self, lacking natural affection, and despising good.

However, true believers can resist this trend.

• Reach out intentionally, even when others don’t.


• Encourage face-to-face interaction instead of just digital communication.


• Pray for those who are drifting away, knowing they may be struggling in ways they don’t express.


• Stay rooted in God’s Word, maintaining a spirit of love even as the world grows colder.

Jesus said the world would recognize His disciples by their love for one another. Even if the world continues to pull apart, believers can remain steadfast in real, meaningful connections that reflect Christ’s love.
