Devotional #47 in 1 Peter

Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator. (1 Peter 4:19 KJV)

In Peter’s day and throughout history, Christians walking in the will of God suffered. New Testament examples include Stephen (Acts 7), James (Acts 12), Paul (2 Corinthians 11:23-27), and Peter (John 21:18-19), who suffered martyrdom. Scripture records the execution of Stephen and James in Acts 7 and 12. Peter’s was predicted by Christ (John 21)  and affirmed by historical tradition, as was Paul’s. Acts 8 and 9 and many other NT references record lesser persecutions.

Peter addresses those who suffer “according to the will of God.”  God’s promises of security do not guarantee protection from persecution. Paul writes in 2 Timothy 3:12 that “all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”

In our text today, Peter tells believers how to face the fiery trials of persecution. Commit (and be constantly committing) or entrust the keeping of your souls to God. Your salvation is secure. We are possessors of eternal life and will never perish because we are kept safe in the hands of Jesus and the Heavenly Father. (John 10:28-29).

We are to commit the keeping of our souls to the faithful Creator. The Creator meets the needs of His people. He provides food, clothing, protection, and even dying grace if the persecution continues to that extreme. Stephen experienced that grace in Acts 7. Hebrews 11:32-40 lists various Old Testament heroes of the faith who endured suffering and will reap rewards from the Lord in the future.

Commit your soul to the Faithful Creator who will help you in your time of suffering.
