When God Remembers Us

Human beings often forget: A waitress forgets part of our order. We might forget an appointment.  A husband can forget his wife’s birthday. And a person’s name can escape us five seconds after we hear it.

We can sometimes feel forgotten by God. A promise he gave us goes unfulfilled for years. A painful situation or pressing need remains unsolved and unmet and we wonder, “Where is God?” In Genesis 8:1 it NASB says that God, “remembered Noah” and all the other lives aboard the ark. In 1 Samuel 1:19-20 we read that the Lord remembered  barren Hannah and she conceived and gave birth to a son she dedicated to the Lord’s service. In Psalms 25:6-7, the psalmist asks the Lord to remember, “Your compassion and Your faithfulness,” but to not remember, “the sins of my youth or my wrongdoings.” (NASB)

Does God really forget us?  Does he lose track of us and our concerns? 

Whenever the Bible says that God “remembered” someone it does NOT mean he forgot about them and their situation in the sense we, as human beings, forget. It does not mean he abandoned the individual or group or was distracted in any way. God is perfect and knows all things. He is the ultimate multitasker. God “remembering” is simply a way of putting in human terms a special visitation of his attention, of the time coming for him to meet the need, to fulfill the promise according to his perfect love, will, and wisdom. 

Israel, as they endured the Lord’s chastisement once asked, “Has the Lord forgotten us?” God answered, ““Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? . . . But even if that were possible, I would not forget you.See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.” (Isaiah 49:15-16a NLT) We can be sure that God remembers his children today just as fondly. His loving care and attention are always upon us. He never loses sight, never stops working on our behalf, and never abandons us. The Bible says it and we can believe it despite our feelings.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, thank you that you never forget or forsake me. Help me believe that even when I feel otherwise. AMEN.
