Somewhere far in the fields beyond Egypt lived an old shepherd. It seemed his days of adventure were over, considering he was already eighty years old and had lived a full life. After decades of this quiet lifestyle in the country, he probably did not expect much more to happen before he would be gone.
Then one ordinary day as he was out herding his sheep, he saw the burning bush that changed his life. The time had finally come for Moses to free the nation of Israel from bondage.
Moses was… reluctant. This job seemed overpowering for an aging man like himself. And when he heard that he would have to speak to Pharoah, he tried to excuse himself.
“I have a speech impediment!” was his concern. “How am I supposed to speak to Pharoah at all, let alone in a way that would amaze him?”
His worry was completely reasonable. Having had some misunderstandings with pharaohs in the past, he probably didn’t have much of a desire to head back before the imposing throne, especially since he lost his title of a prince and adopted the more modest profession of shepherding. It would be hard to impress the new, young, powerful ruler of the nation, and Moses did not see himself succeeding in any positive impression. Besides, it wouldn’t be any diplomatic persuasive speech where Moses would promise Pharaoh some great outcome for removing all the slaves of the land which Egypt relied on. It was more like a very bold phrase: “Let my people go.”
Bold indeed… for an outcast, an elderly man who raised sheep his entire life, and who spoke with an impediment. It is hard to imagine being in Moses’ position but I am sure he felt far from comfortable and confident. But there is beauty in simplicity and wisdom in God’s plans. Despite Moses’ apparent weakness, he would become the deliverer of the nation of Israel, delivering many powerful speeches, rebukes, prayers, and exhortations throughout his remaining life.
Speaking through the burning bush, God commanded Moses to throw his staff to the ground. Moses threw it and beheld a serpent. And then comes my favorite part, which shows the very human side of Moses and his dislike of reptiles. He fled from the serpent! And so would I.
“I do not like serpents,” Moses might have tried to explain from a distance. But God called him back and directed him to lift the reptile by the tail. Moses, to his credit, did so, and God changed the serpent back into a staff.
It certainly seemed that God meant to use the very things considered “weaknesses” in Moses for his own special purpose. Later in life, Moses would be forced to face a serpent epidemic in the wilderness and conquer it by forming a serpent image and placing it on a pole.
Reflecting on the life of Moses and his calling, I can see similar parallels where God works in our lives, preparing us for His purpose. God can show His power and strength in us when we are willing to admit that we cannot control that area and need His help. Who would have thought that the mighty passages and speeches we read and admire in the Old Testament would be spoken by a man with as much speaking qualification as Moses? Who would have thought that Moses would be able to face and conquer the trials and difficulties of the wilderness? But God had prepared him, in His own special time and way.
If you hear God calling you to overcome a weakness or obstacle in your life that is hindering you from serving Him or causing you to be afraid, try surrendering it into His hands and allowing Him to work through your weakness to show His strength and glorify Him. Don't forget, He has a purpose for every season He brings into your life, and He has a plan for you!
