In the hill country of Judea
A child was born one day.
Born to a woman barren for years,
To a woman on whom rested God's favour.

In the hill country of Judea
A high priest prayed in the sanctuary.
His speech now gone as he recalled
The beautiful angel at incensing time
Who appeared to him near the altar bearing the good news.

In the hill country of Judea
The high priest's speech returned the day
His faith restored as he wrote on the writing tablet,
The name to be given to the child
The name as given by the angel to him.

In the hill country of Judea
People wondered and amazed
What would this child be?
Surely a holy prophet in the making
As the Lord's hand was clearly upon him.

In the hill country of Judea
Elizabeth and Zechariah celebrated
Their first born a precursor to the coming of the Lord.
To be a light to the Gentiles and the Jews.

In the hill country of Judea
John was born to pave the way.
Filled with the Holy Spirit before birth
To announce and ready the people for the day.
The prepared day when the Messiah would come.

In the hill country of Judea
The babe born brought great rejoicing
He was great in the sight of God.
The pride of his parents, to go ahead of the Lord
To turn the hearts of the people to the wisdom of God.
