IF YOU KNEW…

On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” John 2:1-3 (English Standard Version).

At the marriage in Cana of Galilee, there was a crisis, they ran out of wine while the event was still ongoing. When the wine finished, nobody at the event thought about Jesus or about talking to Him concerning the situation. Obviously, nobody at the event knew Who Jesus is or what He’s capable of doing, except His mother. Jesus’ mother was the only one who knew Him and what He’s capable of doing to turn the situation around, that was the reason she came to seek His intervention. To the couple and all the guests at the marriage, Jesus was not more than any other regular guest, and that was the reason nobody ever thought about any solution coming from Him.

Can you imagine! Sitting down quietly at the marriage event was the Son of the Living God, Immanuel “God with us”, Messiah, the express image of the Almighty God, the One in Whom dwells all the fullness of God bodily, the One Who has power to summon twelve (12) legions of Angels at once, yet the people didn’t recognize Him and what He’s capable of doing to turn their situation around. What a pity! If Mary the mother of Jesus, who knew Him and what He’s capable of doing to turn the situation around, had not sought His intervention, the event would have ended in shame and the great miracle would never have taken place or recorded.

It is unfortunate how many of us miss out and never get to experience divine intervention and endless possibilities because we do not know Jesus and what He’s capable of doing in our situations. Yes, like Jesus was sitting at the marriage in Cana of Galilee, but no one recognized Him or what He’s capable of doing in the situation, Jesus is sitting right with many of us; He’s in our team, He’s on our side, yet we suffer defeats and deprivations like we never had Him. Truth is, you may have Jesus, but if you don’t know Him and what He’s capable of doing, you are bound to suffer like you never had Him. It is not enough to have Jesus present with you, do you really know His Person and what He’s capable of doing?

The deprivation of those who have access to Him but don’t really know Him and what He’s capable of doing is inestimable. Great possibilities are always withheld from those who have access to Jesus but don’t really know His Person, His power, and what He’s capable of doing in their situations. The encounter of the Samarian woman in John Chapter 4 clearly explains this:

A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)  Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” John 4:7-10 (English Standard Version).

When the Samarian woman met the Lord Jesus at the well, she obviously didn’t know or recognize who He was. The woman didn’t realize that the Man standing before her is the Messiah, her Creator, her Maker, the One Who knows the beginning and the end, the One Who knows all details about her life and have answers to all her questions. In the conversation with the woman, look at what Jesus said: “If you knew …. you would have asked…, and he would have given you living water.” In other words, since the woman didn’t know or recognize Jesus –the Messiah, her deep need was not met because she didn’t even realize the great things the Man standing before her could do in giving her the living water.   

What is the problem with us believers? We have unrestricted access to Jesus Christ but hardly experience His power in our lives and situations. What’s standing in our way is that we don’t really know the Person and Power of Jesus like we need to. “If you knew Him…you would have asked…., and He would have… It is unfortunate that our not knowing the Person and Power of Jesus has limited us, even in those things we could have asked and the steps we could have taken. Of course, we cannot blame the Lord, “He would have”, only if we knew. That means it never happened, He didn’t do what He would have done in our situation because we have not come into a place of knowledge of Him. In Christ, there’s realm of endless possibilities and greatness, but only those who really know His Person can ascend into that realm.

If only you knew…
