A Heart for Hospitality

“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Hebrews 13:3 ESV

Both the demands of a busy lifestyle and the tendency to put self before others has robbed believers of the pleasure and blessing of hospitality. Showing love and kindness by being hospitable has created a Christian culture that desires to look after self and neglect the needs of others. And yet being hospitable is a command given in Scripture. “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” (Hebrews 13:16). To show hospitality is a fundamental responsibility of God's people, emulating the love and kindness of Jesus our Lord.

Hospitality pleases God. Selfish living does not. We are to not neglect showing the sacrifice of loving deeds towards others; both believers and unbelievers. Hospitality comes in all different shapes and forms, depending upon our individual circumstances. What works for one, may not work for another, but the bottom line is, no matter our situation, we are commanded to show hospitality. This is a “fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable to God.” (Philippians 4:18).

Are we in need of a hospitable person who can befriend and support us right now? Perhaps a good place to start is by reaching out in love and offering hospitality to another. Remember Abraham who showed kindness to three men in Genesis 18 and found he was sitting with God himself. Angels who brought him very good news indeed.

'Heavenly Father, please give me a heart for hospitality and show me how I can love by meeting the needs of others through this gift of service. Amen.'
