The King's Edict

‘By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.’ Hebrews 11:23 (NIV).

Moses, one of Israel’s greatest leaders, began life in turbulent times. When he was born, the Hebrews were slaves in Egypt, and the ruling Pharaoh, feeling threatened by this growing nation, issued an edict that all Hebrew male babies were to be killed.

But Moses parents, knowing that their son was no ordinary child, ignored the king’s edict, hid the baby for three months and then built a small papyrus basket which concealed the child in the reeds along the Nile River. God used this courageous act to place Moses, the future leader of His choice, into the house of Pharaoh.

Moses' parents believed in God and acted in faith, knowing that He would protect their son. They chose to obey the commands of God rather than the edict of an earthly king.

Sometimes we may be fearful of the evil that presses in around us. However, when faced with evil, we must, like Moses’ parents, look for ways to overcome it, so that we are not overcome by it. We must trust that God will use our effort, no matter how small, to overcome evil with good (Romans 21:21).

Moses' parents chose not to look at the hopelessness of their situation, but with eyes of faith, trusted in the goodness and provision of God. Despite the evil that surrounds us, can we continue to believe God's promises and take a stand for Him? What can our eyes of faith see and believe God for just now?
