“Jesus said to him, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk.’ and immediately the man was made well, took up his bed and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.” “Afterwards Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, ‘See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.’ ” John 5:8,9,14
What heartache this man must have endured. For years, while he struggled to get to the pool, someone else would go ahead of him and come back cured. He would see with his own eyes, each time, what life could be like for him but was unable to attain it.
Now was his time, for he was in the presence of the Saviour, the presence of God, Jehovah -Rophi – the God Who heals.
There was no protest from him as to his inability when Jesus commanded him to get up, pick up his bed and walk. With the command came also the power to have it become a reality. The command and the ability both came from Jesus. The man did not really need the healing stream, for with this amazing meeting, his life began anew.
When Jesus sought him out later he challenged the man to “live up to” his new identity. He was no longer the paralyzed beggar living on the fringes of real life but now was the man who had been made well, touched by the saving mercy of the Lord.
