What’s My Purpose?

     Grab your cups, Mommas! I assume most of you extraordinary ladies have a Christmas-related cup, so it’s a good morning for them to get to use and drink that smooth-black-ever-so delicious liquid.
     Let us talk “purpose” this morning. The Lord has had this on my heart a lot lately. Mommas, I think at one point, we all get to seasons in our lives that we question the purpose we have during that moment. We know we love being moms, and we wouldn’t trade it for the world. But we also have those moments where we know we are not “just a mom.” We are wives, teachers, writers, business owners, nurses, counselors, retailers, etc. We are women who work in and outside the home.
     So, what does “purpose” mean exactly? The Oxford dictionary defines it as “the reason something is done or created or for which something exists.” The biblical definition of purpose comes from the Greek word “boule”; The verbal root of boule for purpose means to give counsel, deliberate, purpose, or determine. God’s purpose will never change: to be in His image and dwell with Him in the New Jerusalem. Now that we have both of those definitions understood let us jump back to the purpose of motherhood.
     Take another sip. Your Christmas mug is too pretty to ignore.    

     Purpose 1: We were created by God to conform us to the likeness of His Son and, upon His return, dwell with Him in the New Jerusalem.
     Purpose 2: When we birth these beautiful creatures, God immediately gives us a job to raise them, disciple them, and bring them up according to His Will.
     Purpose 3: All other areas He calls us into during each season to accomplish His Will.

     Mommas, purpose one will not change. The destination doesn’t change, but the road to getting there will look different as the Holy Spirit guides us to grow in Wisdom and Faith. Purpose 2’s task will not change. The road to getting there will look different as the Holy Spirit guides us to grow in Wisdom and Faith to show our children God’s purpose for their lives. Purpose 3, to accomplish His Will, will not change. The road to getting there will look different as the Holy Spirit guides us to grow in Wisdom and Faith, as we are taught through obedience to Him at each stop.

     “God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Gen. 1:27–28)

     "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (Rev. 21:1–4)

     Purpose is the same for all Christian Mommas. It’s the roads that will look different. The world will try to tell us differently, Mommas. They will try to tell us that we don’t have a purpose if we haven’t nailed the perfect career or if we are “just stay-at-home-moms,” but if that is God’s calling to you as a Momma, then you are achieving His purpose by following the road He has set forth for you to accomplish His Will.
     Do not let anyone or anything make you feel any different. The only opinion that matters is Our Heavenly Fathers. Mommas, that will surely give you a feeling of peace.
