What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness, have not attained their goal. Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone. Romans 9:30-32 NIV

Righteousness is through faith and not through works. Does this mean we are not meant to follow the Law. No, we are meant to follow the Law of God, but it is not through following the Law that we are saved. We are saved through the mercy and grace of God and the saving sacrifice which Jesus Christ provided. Our faith is what credits us as being righteous, and in living out our faith we do our best to live according to God’s Law, knowing that there will be times when we stumble but then we with remorseful hearts return to the Lord seeking forgiveness and restoration.
