Chapter 8
In the last chapter, Melchizedek demonstrated the idea that God had always intended to replace the Levitical priesthood. This was demonstrated by the author’s use of the Old Testament Scriptures. This chapter extends the bridge from the old ideas to the new. At the end of chapter 7, we see a superior priest that was perfect, sinless, and eternal. This chapter will show that Jesus is the perfect Priest, and His priesthood is served in a better place. To make this comparison, the author starts by explaining the earthly objects of the tabernacle. The tabernacle and the symbols are representative of the real tabernacle of Heaven. They are symbols of the real covenant with God. The promise of God of a New Covenant is Heavenly and eternal. The New Covenant is far better than the Old, as it failed due to the weakness of humanity. (Hebrews 7:19, 23; Romans 7:12)
God had already made known the eventual transition in Genesis 14 and Psalm 110. The author now uses the words of another prophet Jeremiah. The Prophet Jeremiah wrote of a time when God would create a New Covenant with His people. (Jeremiah 31:31-34) This New Covenant would be written in the minds and hearts of the people and replace external and manufactured methods. Jeremiah wrote this after the Levitical Priesthood meaning it to be something completely separate.
The author is reasoning why God would replace the Old Covenant and states the reason as it was useless and flawed. (Hebrews 7:11; 8:13) The Old Covenant failed because it was dependent upon sinful humans. A New Covenant would need to be grounded on better promises. The finished work of Jesus on behalf of the people is that better promise.
In Chapter 9, we will explore the relationship of the earthly tabernacle to the work of the earthly ministry completed by Jesus Christ.
