What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead. Romans 7:7-8 NIV

Here Paul goes into his sin in coveting. He would not have been aware that it was sin unless he had read the commandment stating not to covet. The Holy Spirit will bring conviction upon each of us, not to belittle us or shame us, but to point out that which is within us which is contrary to what God desires. If we will allow the Holy Spirit to guide us, we can work on these items. Keep in mind though that we must confess our sinfulness before God. Also, having a mentor and someone who you are accountable to, can also help us in dealing with issues which we have. Allow the Holy Spirit to bring conviction when it is needed. Then work on that of which you need to in order to become aligned with what the Lord wants for you.
