“He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32)
When surveying this verse, we must first look at humanity in general. At the beginning of man’s history, he was upright and in perfect harmony with the will of God. He also was in tune with God’s whole creation as a result of being in the will of God’s plan and purpose. But at the fall in the Garden of Eden, he lost that position to include the indwelling Holy Spirit. From that time forward, the man himself is a fractured creation and not on his own can live to his full potential, which is to glorify God in all that he does. In His love for humanity, God shows His mercy and grace towards man in that He has provided a remedy for man’s lost state. As costly as that remedy is, death, God did not spare His own begotten Son.
There are two senses in God, not sparing His Son. God did not have to give Him up to us, as He was not under an obligation towards unfaithful man. He gave His Son up for man’s redemption because His love for man is great. Neither does God spare Jesus from His suffering, even on the cross. God’s Divine Nature could not suffer, as God is the same from the beginning to the end but did give efficacy for man’s redemption. That is to say; the cause was greater than the cost.
Judas betrayed Jesus and gave Him up to be crucified, and Pilate passed judgment on Him, allowing the crucifixion to move forward. But neither could have done what they did without it being in the will of God.
This God allowed for our advantage that in Jesus’ life, we could receive righteousness, in His death, our sins could be paid in full, and by His resurrection, we could receive eternal life. To accomplish this, Jesus had to fulfill the prophecy of the Prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 53:1-2. Not only for us but for all of humanity in all the nations of the earth.
The inference deduced from all things is necessary and beneficial. If we seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, then all comforts in this temporary life here we should enjoy. “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33) We must remember that God knows what is best for us to have. It is God who can best cater to our needs. We should always be thankful that God designs us to do this for us. God is gracious towards us in that He connects our temporal blessings with the atonement of the Lord Jesus.
Our chief attention is to the spiritual blessings received through our relationship with Jesus. Three positions support this conclusion. God first gave His Son to the enemy. “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.” (Romans 5:10) This act was unsought by man, but it was a necessary act of His grace for man’s redemption, and it was even undesired. But God took the first step needed for man’s recovery.
God did not just give an unblemished lamb, but He gave us the very best in His Son. It was the Divine Lamb of God, His only Begotten Son Jesus. There is none other a suitable offering for the wage of sin than the very best and perfect sacrifice that God Himself as Jesus His Son.
The Lord God Almighty’s love is so deep for you that He acts freely to pardon, save, sanctify, and bring His own home. God’s incomprehensible love will freely give all things with no merit or worthiness of the receiver. He freely gave His Son to save humanity gracefully.
