What Is A Secret Place

WHAT IS A SECRET PLACE?

One of the least understood matters in prayer is that there is a secret place. When I looked up the definition of the term this is what I came across. A secret place is a storage place in the house. It may be a room that is dedicated to the storage of possessions in the house. I remember growing up we used to have food pantries as well as the storehouse. These were no go areas for anyone. The Bible says in Genesis 41v56 that “...Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold unto the Egyptians...”  It was in the storehouse that grain had been stored in the years of plenty.

Can you imagine your secret place being where your prayers are stored in the heart of God? I am reminded of Revelation 8 where we see the picture of what happens to our prayers. The angels store them in bowls and when the time is right, incense is mixed therein and the sweet odor rises up to God. The response is amazing:

“And there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.” (Revelation 8v5)

The Hidden Place

The secret place can also be defined as a hidden place away from the hustle and bustles of life. I want to believe that a secret place is like an engine room with thermostats and regulators where you regulate and govern spiritual activity around your life. I remember reading about a church in the UK where the pastor showed his Guest Speaker the so called “thermostat” in action. He took his guest to a room in the basement and in it were women and men groaning in prayer. Upstairs was a great move of God, but the action was created in the secret place.

A few years ago my pastor organized a week of revival in the church. He gave us a task to pray for the meetings. My team of intercessors engaged in a week of prayer and fasting a week before and spent the week of the meetings in prayer and fasting. We were a traditional church who were not used to the moves of the Holy Spirit. But on the last day of the revival week, we had such an outpouring of His Presence that saw deliverance and many people being slain by the Holy Spirit. We had to organize cars to carry people home in their slain state. Never had there been such a move in that church, but little did people know that the jump starter was the engine room in secret. 

I also remember when I joined my current church, our pastors used to have special services. One day we were gathered to pray for a Sunday service. We had been praying and fasting that week. We met in one of the halls at church and during a time of prayer something strange happened. The room was closed off, but as we prayed the door swung wide open. Initially we thought it was the wind. We then backed up the door with a few chairs. A few minutes later the doors swung wide open and we immediately stopped, because God had stepped into the room. When one of our pastors joined the prayer meeting his words were, “What have you done?” Saints, things happen far away from the eyes of men. That Sunday we had strange miracles taking place in the service, all as a result of secret place prayers.

The Throne Of Judgment

A secret place is also a throne of judgment. Psalm 122v5 tells us more about this

“For there are set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David.”

If you want to rule an atmosphere you need to create a throne room from whence you dispense judgments. A person that prays has spiritual government and oversight. I want to add that as spiritual beings we have to govern zones. I like to call myself the mayor of my hood. I govern my territory from the comfort of my secret place. Even in my workplace I choose to govern the atmosphere. Where people are a problem I deal with them in secret and God manifests answers in public.

In 2011 I moved out of home to stay with my wife after our marriage. We moved to a neighborhood which was notorious for robbery and muggings. I remember my landlord warning me not to move at night. The family we replaced had their son mugged at the gate to the house. The challenge was I had to be in church Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings without fail. I remember saying to him, “I am the mayor of this neighborhood and as long as I stay here no one will be mugged on this road.” At first he laughed it off but after seeing how serious I was he decided to agree with me. In the 5 years I stayed there, there was no mugging reported in the stretch of road I lived on. Saints, we can dictate atmospheres if we can move the Hand that moves the universe.

Scripture speaks of the enemy and his setup. Ephesians 6v12 gives us a clear picture of this

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in heavenly places”

You and I need to be able to deal with this ranking in private- principalities, powers, rulers, heavenly places. This is because of an assurance we already have as described in Ephesians 1v21-22  

“Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come: And has put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church”

You and I are seated with Christ in heaven and as such must govern territories. We usually speak of territorial spirits. In our culture we refer to them as spirits that govern territories and places. You and I too must be territorial authorities and this we can do from a secret place.
