1.
Two men walked along in sorrow;
Jesus walked right by their side.
They felt there was no tomorrow;
Life had robbed them of their guide.
They were blinded to His presence,
And they could not recognize
He in His loving providence
Chose them for a great surprise.

2.
Everything had gone so sour;
Their redeemer now was dead.
They had hoped He had the power,
But it seems they were misled.
Their hope had been so shattered
When their Lord was crucified.
Everything that to them mattered
Was now like a river dried.

3.
Even with the women's vision
Of the angel at the tomb,
There was in their minds, division,
And for faith so little room.
Their Lord's body now was missing,
Mystery was everywhere,
And their minds were still dismissing
Facts that could lift from despair.

4.
"O how foolish," said the Master,
"You slow of heart to believe.
If you trusted God's forecaster,
You would then not have to grieve."
Jesus explained all the prophets
Had once said concerning Him.
Searching Scripture brings such profits
When our faith is growing dim.

5.
The day was nearly over,
And they urged their Lord to stay.
There was so much more to cover,
For doubt to be turned away.
Jesus sat at their table,
And with thanks He broke the bread.
In that moment they were able
To see their Lord was not dead.

6.
On the dark road to Emmaus,
On that first great Easter day
They saw light from the Lord Jesus
That would never pass away.
Jesus may be like a stranger,
Yet be with you, as He said.
We can face life's greatest danger,
For He's risen from the dead.
