What is Your Identity?

During the break as I was watching a movie about Jackie Robinson, a black woman came on and made a comment on how blacks have moved up. She continued, that people "who look like us" should be championed, as a picture of a black politician, whose character certainly is not in concert with Christianity, appeared on the screen. That statement is not in concert with Dr. Martin Luther King's "judge a man by the quality of his character, not by the color of his skin."

Jackie Robinson was not only a great baseball player, but he and his friends, who were colorblind, helped him get a fair shot at using his God given talents. Mr. Robinson kept his cool and got through the storm and achieved his goals.

A Christian's identity is in Christ Jesus. Not in a fancy car you own, not in a gang, not even as a baseball player. There is nothing wrong with achieving things, but that is not your identity. Of course, an identity with certain elements is inherintly wrong, such as being a member of a gang or as a drug addict. Decades ago some new kids on the block corrupted their last name and proudly identified themselves as the "Doper-acks".

Awhile back on Facebook, a FB friend wanted me to "like" a Christian bookstore's page. I declined because the page had a photo of a politician, pictured with people associated with the bookstore, whose principles and policies are contrary to Christian views. I was not going to go along in order to get along to like a page that figuratively brought into the fold someone not based on the content of his character but on race. I used to worship in a congregation with the person who asked me to like that page.

It's important to find a sound church and read Christian materals and see movies that show fidelity to scripture. The Bible should be the basis of what's of God and not of humans. It should be the main source that anything else should match.

Recently, I saw a promotional on FaceBook for Christian based counseling, which was connected to a theological seminary. I wasn't about to share it just because it touted itself as being Christian. I perused the seminary's website, and found it integrated worldly values with Christianity. So I decided not to share it. Christians need to be discerning.

"Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming." -Ephesians 4:14

Because I know that Westminster Theological Seminiary is sound, I shared a FaceBook posting about it. Westminster was established in 1929 by a sound seminary professor and preacher who was gaslighted by Princeton Theological Seminary, which was originally Biblical, when he tried to reform it. Princeton started integrating modernism and liberalism with the seminary, as many of the Presbyterian churches started doing in the 1920s. The man had his credentials as a pastor removed and he left Princeton seminary to start Westminster seminary.

It's important for Christians to thoroughly examine the Word for themselves and not be spoon fed the word by slick preachers who tickle the ears. Remember, your identity is in Christ, not in things of this world.
