Our faith, wrote Oz Guiness, "should not be privately engaging but socially irrelevant."

Throughout history, Christians have been at odds with society. Sometimes Christians influenced society, as they did with the American revolution. The founders of our country took a sober look at humans, realizing that they have flaws, but these flaws can be overcome. The bill of rights limited government intrusion on freedom of speech and assembly, freedom of religion, and protects other self evident, God given rights. Until recently, the family and the church kept people on the straight and narrow, but that has changed.

This election is a manifestion of the culture war. It's a battle over whether human reasoning, used by increased government to engage in social engineering in order to create a utopian society or a society steeped in Biblical truths will prevail. Back in the 70s, evangelist Francis Schaeffer wrote that to keep order in society, one of two things would happen. To control the abuse of freedom, which has become license, people will have to be controlled externally through strict government control by programming people, including controlling their speech. This is what political correctness is. As Charleston Heston wrote, "political correctness is tyranny with manners." The other option is, Dr. Schaeffer wrote, is to create a Reformed Christian consensus, whereby people will be kept under control from the inside. Self control, by the way, is one of the fruits of the spirits.

Christians should vote for candidates who best match Biblical principles. There are Christian vote guides that show candidate responses to questions, without editorial comments from the guide.

Unlike the previous administration, the current White House is protecting first ammendment rights - freedom of religion - to students who wish to bring their Bibles to school and worship in a voluntary assembly which does not conflict with the school, except maybe it goes against the grain of a school's humanistic agenda. The first ammendment was established to protect speech that some may not agree with.

An example of how the family should be the focus on improving our society is the drug problem at a local high school. Parents demanded that the school district, and the government, do something about the problem. The government can help somewhat, but the root of the problem is spritual bankruptcy. The best way to resolve the drug problem there, and anywhere, is to start with the family, where parents find a good, sound church and bring their kids up in the admonishion of the Lord. Families that pray together stay together. Ultimately, the government can no better resolve the problem than the Wizard of Oz can magically resolve Dorothy and friends' problems. Christians need to be salt and light to a broken world!

"If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land." -Jeremiah 33:3
