Faith Over Fear

Today people are scared. Scared that the Corona Virus will kill them. When they approach others, even from far away, they flinch and sometimes wait for people to go away, and sometimes rush through. Some people act the way we did about girls when we were very young, keeping far away from them for fear we'd catch Cooties! They incessantly wipe down shopping carts, apply sanitizer excessively, and ask "has this cart been sanitized?"

Cooties, as explained on Wikipedia: "Cooties is a fictitious childhood disease. It is used in the United States and Canada as a rejection term and an infection tag game (such as Humans vs. Zombies). It is similar to the British 'dreaded lurgi', and to terms used in the Nordic countries, in Italy, Australia and New Zealand. A child is said to 'catch' cooties through close contact with an 'infected' person or from an opposite-sex child of a similar age."

Oh ye of little faith!

At a recent Bible study, we studied 2nd Timothy verses 1-7:

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3 thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

4 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

In this passage, the apostle Paul encourages Timothy to stay strong in the faith and to remember his heritage. The salient point is that with God, we should not be afraid and that we will have a sound mind. Christians need not buy into the recent hysteria and believe that the sky is falling! Nor are we afraid that the earth will soon be a ball of fire if we don't cut our carbon emmissions. As part of God's great design, he arranged for plants to absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen and humans and animals to breath oxygen and exhale carbons dioxide. It is earth in the balance.

Our God is sovereign!
