"Any man's death diminishes me..." -John Donne
A little while back, in Bucks County, PA, authorities found the dead body of a homeless woman along a highway in the wee hours of the morning. They believed she was hit by a truck that didn't stop after it hit her. There was an investigation. Media coverage quickly faded and to my knowledge, the investigation was not concluded. The matter seemed to die, just as the homeless woman did.
By contrast, the coverage of the murder of a man who happened to be black by a police officer which is a gross abuse of power goes on in finitum, ad nauseum. It seems to be the talk of the town each time the news comes on. Politicians and others incessantly harp on this not mainly as an abuse of police authority but as evidence of systemic racism in our land. They call for us to change our ways, which includes senstivitity education, although the rogue officer was brought to justice.
I for one, am sensitive to the death of a person who is made in the image of God as well as death as a result of abuse of authority. As John Donne wrote many centuries ago, "Do not ask for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." All lives matter!
A little before the homeless woman got hit on the road, local media reported the death of someone believed to be homeless at a busy intersection by a Walgreens in Levittown, PA. Some people reportedly said of the untimely death that it was "of no consequence." The woman who was hit on the road was treated about the same was as if a vehicle had hit a deer! Evidently these lives do not matter as much as other lives. This is not what the Bible teaches.
On one occasion at a homeless meal, one of the hosts told a representative from an organization that allegedly helps homeless people to talk with me, as I knew what was going on. Soon I found that the organization focuses on racism, with homelessness in the far background. The representative called me and she kept talking about what to do about racism. I told her there is no widespread racism in this country and we debated the issue. She cited some vague references to racism. I cited examples of reverse discrimination. We agreed to disagree and I never connected with the organization.

This is a heartwarming message. You have a heart for the homeless. And I agree they are precious and matters too. Unfortunately, this world can be cruel. The Bible even teaches us how to care for the poor. We see this in Proverbs 19:17, Hebrews 4:16, and several scriptures. Thank God for those of us who are sensitive to the underprivileged and help them. The only time we should look down on anyone is when we are picking them up.
But I have to respectfully disagree with your statement that there is no widespread racism in this country. It’s easy to say this when you don’t understand what we have been through. As an African American, the white man brought many to this new world as slaves to aid in the production of such lucrative crops as tobacco. They practiced it throughout the American colonies in the 17th and 18th centuries, and African-American slaves helped build the economic foundations of the new nation.
I am blessed to come from a multi-cultural family. And not all white people are racist. I have several friends who are white, and they are the kindest people ever. Many do treat black people like they’re inferior. Have you ever had to be beaten mercilessly, hanged on a tree, your body set on fire, and left to display like an art show? If you don’t comply with the white man rules, do they place unimaginable pain and suffering on your life as they did our ancestors? Has a white cop used stop and frisk to pull you over you for an unjustifiable cause? How many white cops target a white man because of the color of your skin? And let’s not forget about the inequality with jobs and opportunities that blacks are qualified for, but are passed over. You wouldn’t understand the meaning behind black lives matter. Yes, all lives are precious. But there is racism in this country.
I don’t know what it’s like to be white, and you don’t know what it’ s like to be black. But everybody has something in common. Do you know what that is? We are human beings made in the image of God. With God, there is no respect of person, but there is with people. The antidote to overcome hatred, bigotry, and discrimination is when everyone loves as He does. Otherwise, the spirit of racism will continue to spill out into this country like a poisonous venom destroying everything it touches. I will treat people better than how I want them to treat me regardless if they deserve it or not.
