The Dangers Of The 'Eternal Security' Doctrine: A Current Example

In 2008 I wrote an article provocatively titled, The Dangers Of The 'Eternal Security' Doctrine, hoping to cast a wider net of readership. This short article aims to address the same concerns as the first with a current example.

First things first. The “Eternal Security” doctrine is absolutely, unequivocally, biblical. Jesus, Himself, said, “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” - John 10:28. The “dangers” come in the interpretation of the doctrine in regard to everyday life situations. With this in mind, let's explore what these two dangers are using a current event.

In 2019, two professing “Christians” - an author and a worship leader – rejected their faith in social media posts causing quite a debate among Christians in relation to the Eternal Security doctrine.

Some would say, “The Eternal Security doctrine demands that these two individuals – regardless of whether they denied their faith or not – be saved. They put their faith in Jesus at one time, and that carries on into eternity. 'Once saved – always saved.'”

Still, others would say, “See! Here's proof that Eternal Security doesn't work! These two men lost their salvation!”

Both of these statements are 100% wrong and dangerous. Neither is correct – nor can they be. The Bible is clear; a person who gives their life to the LORD can never be lost, nor can they ever deny their faith and the One Who bought them.

The fact of the matter is: they were never saved to begin with. Something we call a “false conversion”. Is there hope for them? Praise the LORD the answer is absolutely! I have witnessed it first-hand in my own family.

My youngest daughter, at approximately 14 years of age, was going to church with a friend, professed to believe in Jesus, and got baptized at the church where I served on the worship team.

Several years later, she went to attend a university. I warned her with tears that the godless professors would challenge her professed faith and plant seeds of doubt if she wasn't firmly established in the Word. That they were masters of deceit and really good at what they do.

Needless to say, my warnings went unheeded and she bought into the evolutionary lie, denying her faith and becoming a self-professed atheist.

With years of prayers from family and friends asking the LORD to bring someone into her life to challenge her on her new belief system with love and clarity, the LORD answered our prayers.

Today she is married to a godly man who is studying to become a pastor and her heart is on fire for the LORD. She had a false conversion and, even though she at one time professed her faith in Jesus, she was never actually saved.

These are “The Dangers Of The 'Eternal Security' Doctrine” that need to be remedied and clarified among the Body of Christ. Yes, “once saved – always saved”; but one truly needs to be saved for this to be a reality.

Never give up hope – even when one denies a faith they once professed. I'm living proof that prayers are powerful to the glory of God!
