‘But when his brothers saw that their father loved Joseph more than them, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him.’ Genesis 37:4 (NRSV)

Once the favored son with a blessed life, Joseph soon found himself as an outcast, alone in a foreign land. Joseph’s life had hit the wall and all that was true for him before was no more. When our lives hit the wall, we are forced to re-evaluate our image of God. Who is this God who says He loves us, but allows all that we value to fall away? When our lives are in turmoil, we are forced to face our weaknesses and limitations. We can no longer rely on our gifts, character, successes or strength to get us through.

When life hits the wall, we need more than just ourselves to get through the crisis. Wanting to make sense of the mess, we need to listen to God. Despite how we feel, we are in fact, right where God wants us to be and where He can begin to restore us to wholeness.

If we dare to believe that God is in the midst of the darkness and uncertainty, it can become a healing, transforming place. God hasn’t abandoned us after all. He is with us, as He was with Joseph. We need courage to face the truth of who God is and to trust that He is lovingly establishing everything that concerns us.

‘Father, life is hard right now. I am confused, scared and want to run. Help me to trust you. Remind me that you are holding me and working all things for my good. Thank you.’
