                                                     Never Unemployed

At a Saturday morning ‘Men’s Breakfast’ at our church I was listening to a young man share his testimony. During the course of his message, he mentioned he was unemployed.

Afterwards before everyone departed I went over to his table and shared something with him that gave him a new perspective on ‘the Great Commission.’ Once we come to faith in Jesus our vocation and values become Spirit led.

I explained to this young man; “I came to accept Jesus at age 15 and am now 80 years old, and I’ve never been unemployed all these past 65 years. Throughout my growing and learning experiences of living, and even with my higher vocational and academic learning, I applied this to my ‘avocation.’  Why I’ve never been unemployed is because my ‘real vocation’ was to become ‘a fisher of men.’”

Becoming a ‘Follower of Jesus,’ our true vocation is not what we do to put bread on the table and pay the bills.

The Apostle Paul, with Aquila and Priscilla were tentmakers by trade. I was employed 40 years working for the U.S. Gov’t. in administrative responsibilities.  But this was really my avocation.

Making a profession of faith to follow Jesus, God does the equipping to what He sets us to be doing. He will never leave us or forsake us, to be without the skills He expects us to use as a ‘fisher of men.’ The choices we make, and our determination to use the skills God trains us for, we have no cause to ever think we’ll be unemployed.

 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Mathew 4:19 NKJV
